The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a possible nationwide strike, accusing the Federal Government of failing to implement multiple agreements signed since 2009. At a press conference in Abuja, ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, condemned the government’s delay in addressing critical issues such as:
Non-implementation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and its renegotiations.
Withheld salaries from the 2022 strike and unpaid wages for part-time and sabbatical lecturers due to IPPIS.
Unreleased Earned Academic Allowances and revitalization funds.
Political interference in university governance and erosion of institutional autonomy.
Non-constitution of governing councils and unchecked proliferation of new universities.
ASUU urged the government to fulfill promises made, including the release of N150 billion for university revitalization and proper integration of earned allowances into the 2026 budget. The union also called for an education summit and warned it will not tolerate continued neglect.
While reiterating openness to dialogue, ASUU stressed it would not stand by while members’ rights are violated, insisting that resolving these issues is critical to ensuring quality education and national development.
