President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.
Mr. Adeniyi, whose tenure was due to expire on August 31, 2025, will now remain in office until August 31, 2026. The extension, according to a statement from the State House, is aimed at ensuring the continuity of key reforms and projects currently being driven under his leadership.
The statement highlighted three priority areas that necessitated the extension:
The modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service;
The implementation of the National Single Window Project; and
The execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
President Tinubu commended the Customs boss for what he described as “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the additional year would further consolidate gains in trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security.
Mr. Adeniyi, a seasoned customs officer and reform advocate, has led a wave of modernisation efforts aimed at transforming the agency into a digitally driven and globally competitive institution.
The President’s decision comes amid a broader push to enhance Nigeria’s global trade posture and ensure robust revenue collection.
