Commander Onoja Bags Prestigious NUJ Media Award, Salutes NSCDC Boss for Visionary Leadership

Commander John Attah Onoja, Head of the Special Mining Marshals under the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has been honoured by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, for his exceptional dedication and patriotic service in safeguarding Nigeria’s mineral resources.

The award ceremony, held in Abuja, recognized Commander Onoja’s personal sacrifices in the fight against illegal mining and acknowledged the transformative leadership of the NSCDC Commandant General, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, whose vision birthed the Special Mining Marshals unit.

In his acceptance speech, Commander Onoja paid glowing tribute to Professor Audi, describing him as a “transformational leader, courageous reformer, and true patriot.” He credited the Commandant General with the establishment of the Special Mining Marshals, which he said has significantly disrupted illegal mining operations and restored order to Nigeria’s extractive sector.

“This award, first and foremost, belongs to the man whose vision gave life to the Special Mining Marshals,” Onoja stated. “Professor Audi not only conceived this initiative but equipped us with the tools, strategy, and moral backing to succeed. His leadership has been the bedrock of our accomplishments.”

Commander Onoja expressed deep appreciation to the NUJ FCT Council for the recognition, noting that it served as a validation of the work often carried out silently and under considerable threat.

“I am deeply humbled by this honour. Thank you to the NUJ FCT Council for acknowledging the quiet sacrifices and persistent efforts we make, often in dangerous and remote locations,” he said.

Speaking candidly about the risks faced in the field, Onoja revealed the daily dangers encountered by his officers, including armed attacks, ambushes, and life-threatening situations in rugged and hostile environments.

“These are not petty criminals. We’re up against sophisticated syndicates armed with weapons and money. I’ve had close brushes with death. Several of my men have sustained injuries or received threats. This mission goes beyond law enforcement—it’s a test of courage and conviction.”

He further described the emotional toll of operating in harsh terrains such as forests, mountains, and border regions, where officers work to intercept looted mineral resources. Despite these challenges, he reaffirmed his resolve to continue the mission, drawing strength from Professor Audi’s confidence in the unit.

“My resilience stems from carrying out the vision of a leader who refuses to watch Nigeria’s wealth plundered in silence. I dedicate this award to Professor Audi and to every brave officer standing beside me in this national assignment.”

In her keynote address, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, praised Commander Onoja’s integrity, professionalism, and quiet patriotism. She described him as a rare public servant whose bravery and results-driven approach stood out during a nationwide review of field operations and community feedback.

> “At a time when Nigeria is bleeding from unchecked resource theft, officers like Commander Onoja are holding the line. His discipline and selfless service are deeply commendable. This award is not just recognition—it is a national endorsement of effectiveness and sincerity,” Ike said.

She also called for stronger collaboration between the media and law enforcement agencies like the NSCDC to expose environmental crimes and dismantle illegal mining networks across the country.

Commander Onoja concluded by reaffirming his commitment to the NSCDC’s mission, vowing to intensify operations despite the risks.

“This award is not just a trophy—it’s a call to greater duty. I remain committed to the fight for justice and the protection of our natural resources. With Professor Audi’s continued support, we will not relent.”

As he received the award to a standing ovation, Commander Onoja stood not only as a decorated officer but also as a symbol of national resilience, quiet sacrifice, and principled leadership in the service of Nigeria.
