In a bid to promote preventive healthcare and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed health agenda, the National Deputy Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, has organized a free medical outreach at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
The exercise, which focused on testing for fasting blood sugar and blood pressure, was aimed at promoting early detection of lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, which are often undiagnosed until too late.
Speaking with journalists during the event, Hajiya Zainab, who also serves as Chairperson of the Governing Board of Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, said the outreach aligns with the President’s “Youth Hub” and health-focused agenda of building a healthier, more productive population.
“Mr. President appointed me as the Chairperson of the Federal Teaching Hospitals Board, and one of our mandates is to ensure accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for the people,” she stated.
“These days, we hear of sudden deaths caused by undetected medical issues. That’s why I decided to organize this free medical test, especially for our people here at the APC headquarters.”
According to her, the outreach was initially designed to cater to 250 individuals, but due to the morning rainfall, about 192 staff members participated.
To ensure accurate results, participants were required to fast before the tests. In return, the organizers provided food after the screenings, including cooked meals and various palliative items such as rice, curry, macaroni, sugar, and bread.
“We didn’t just test and go—we fed everyone and also provided palliatives in line with Mr. President’s goal of alleviating poverty and supporting citizens’ welfare,” she added.
While the outreach was open to all, Hajiya Zainab emphasized that the main target was women, acknowledging their unique health challenges.
“Women are more vulnerable due to pregnancy, childbirth, managing homes, and careers. Although the event was inclusive, I made sure our women were prioritized. I had informed them beforehand so they could take full advantage of it.”
The APC Deputy Women Leader also noted that the program will be sustained regularly to encourage health consciousness among party members and the general public.
“Once you know your health status, you can make lifestyle adjustments and live healthier. A healthy workforce is a productive workforce. By the grace of God, we plan to continue this initiative,” she concluded.
