Minor Explosion at Ilese Barracks Contained — No Casualties, Says Nigerian Army

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a minor explosion and fire outbreak at Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, has been fully contained, with no casualties recorded.

Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Apollonia Anele, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the incident occurred in the early hours of August 14, 2025.

According to the statement, the localized explosion took place within one of the storage buildings of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device (C-IED) Squadron, sparking a limited fire.

Troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, swiftly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other facilities.

“Importantly, no lives were lost, and no injuries were sustained. The structural damage was confined to the affected building and some stored materials. A detailed assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss,” Anele stated.

The Army urged residents of Ilese and surrounding communities to remain calm and go about their normal activities.

A thorough investigation, in partnership with relevant agencies, has commenced to determine the cause of the explosion and prevent a recurrence.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all its personnel as well as neighbouring communities,” the statement added.
