Troops Neutralise Bandits in Niger State, Recover Weapons in Babana Operation

Troops of the 22 Armoured Brigade have recorded a major breakthrough against banditry in Niger State, neutralising two armed criminals and recovering weapons during a midnight operation in Babana, Borgu Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued on Thursday, 28 August 2025, by the Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, the incident occurred at about 2:50 a.m. when troops deployed at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Babana engaged bandits attempting to infiltrate the area.

The soldiers reportedly overpowered the assailants with superior firepower, forcing them to retreat in disarray. During a follow-up operation along the bandits’ withdrawal route, troops neutralised two of the criminals on the outskirts of Babana town.

Recovered items include one AK-47 rifle, four loaded magazines with 60 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 323 rounds of 7.62x54mm ammunition, and a mobile phone.

The Army also confirmed that an officer and a soldier sustained gunshot injuries to their legs during the encounter. Both personnel are currently receiving medical treatment. The remains of the neutralised bandits have been handed over to relevant authorities.

Commending the troops, the Commander of 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, hailed their vigilance and resilience. He assured residents that the Brigade would sustain aggressive operations to rid the area of criminal elements and safeguard lives and property.
