The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has rebranded the North Central security outfit Operation SAFE HAVEN to Joint Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE (JTF OPEP). The official unveiling took place in Jos, Plateau State, where the CDS flagged off the newly named operation.
According to a statement signed by the Media Information Officer of JTF OPEP, Major Samson Nantip Zhakom, General Musa said the change reflects a broader mandate, renewed purpose, and stronger resolve to guarantee not just temporary safety but sustainable peace across the Joint Operations Area.
The CDS noted that while Operation SAFE HAVEN had significantly contributed to addressing the region’s complex security challenges, the new operation seeks to go further by integrating military, political, judicial, and community efforts. He stressed that JTF OPEP would prioritize inter-agency collaboration, intelligence-driven operations, and community engagement under a whole-of-society approach.
“I urge all troops to embrace this new identity with pride, discipline, and renewed vigour as we pursue lasting national security,” General Musa charged.
In his welcome address, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division and Commander JTF OPEP, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, said the rebranding signals a strategic shift designed to make operations more proactive, intelligence-led, and result-oriented. He called on community leaders, religious institutions, civil society groups, and youth organisations to strengthen their partnership with the Task Force in the quest for enduring peace.
Similarly, the Chief of Defence Operations (CDOPS), Major General EV Onumajuru, said JTF OPEP would address gaps in past operations by improving early warning mechanisms and dominating ungoverned spaces with the cooperation of local communities.
Highlights of the ceremony included an inspection of the quarter guard, the decoration of the JTF OPEP Commander with a new operational badge, the hoisting of the JTF OPEP flag, and an address to troops of 3 Division and the newly rebranded Task Force.
