Police Reacts as NBA Sues IGP Over Tinted Glass Permit Policy

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reacted to reports that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has dragged the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, to court over the issuance of tinted-glass permits.

In a statement released on Wednesday, 10 September 2025, by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police described the NBA’s claims as misleading, stressing that the policy is backed by law.

Quoting the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, the Force explained that Section 2(3a) empowers the IGP or any officer authorised by him to grant or approve tinted permits. It added that Section 1(2) of the Act requires applicants to show good cause—such as health or security reasons—before permits can be issued.

“The essence of this regulation aligns with the mandate of the Police to prevent crimes. The tinted permit remains a critical tool for combating kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and ‘one chance’ operations,” the statement read.

On the issue of charges, the NPF clarified that fees attached to the permits are strictly processing costs and for maintaining the digital infrastructure supporting the service. This, it noted, is in line with Section 26(e) and (f) of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, which empowers the Police to render specialised services at a fee.

The statement further highlighted the successes recorded with the Electronic Central Motor Registry (e-CMR), through which stolen vehicles have been tracked and recovered nationwide.

Dismissing criticisms of illegality, the Police maintained that the tinted-glass permit policy is lawful, transparent, and constitutional.

The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to professionalism, transparency, and safeguarding the rights of Nigerians, while assuring continued efforts towards a safer and more secure country.
