The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that its troops are harassing residents of Ochon community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State amid a lingering land dispute with neighbouring Alesi community in Ikom Local Government Area.
In a statement on Sunday, 21 September 2025, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lt. Col. Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, described the claims as “false, misleading, and aimed at discrediting the efforts of troops working tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”
Ayeni explained that soldiers of 245 Battalion, deployed under 82 Division, were in the area strictly for internal security operations. He said their mandate was to protect lives, secure critical infrastructure, and support civil authorities in maintaining law and order, in line with constitutional provisions.
He recalled that troops had responded swiftly to renewed clashes between the two communities on 19 September 2025 to prevent escalation and restore normalcy in the affected parts of Ikom and Obubra LGAs.
Reiterating the Army’s neutrality, Ayeni stressed that 82 Division has no stake in communal, ethnic, political, or land ownership disputes. “Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property,” he said.
The Army urged residents of both Alesi and Ochon to disregard what it termed false reports and to continue embracing peaceful avenues in resolving disputes.
Ayeni assured the people of Cross River State of the Division’s commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights. He added that the Army would continue to work with other security agencies, civil authorities, and traditional institutions to ensure lasting peace in the state.
The public was also encouraged to report any credible information on security threats or possible misconduct by personnel through established channels for prompt action.
