A major political shift is reportedly underway in Enugu State, as leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have announced that the Enugu State Government and key political figures across the state are set to officially join the APC on Monday, October 14, 2024.
Speaking to journalists at the APC Media centre in Abuja, Committee chairman, Dr. Ben Nwonye, revealed that preparations are already in top gear to welcome the state government and its officials into the ruling party, describing the move as part of a “Renewable Agenda” aimed at uniting the Transformative Vision of Governor Peter Mbah with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the Dr. Nwonye “For the past 10 years, Enugu State has remained in opposition. But all that will change on Tuesday, the 14th of October, 2024, when the government will be declaring for APC. And the government is not coming alone.”
He disclosed that the Enugu State Government’s planned defection will involve a mass movement of political officeholders and stakeholders, including 261 councillors, 24 members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, members of the National Assembly, and top officials of the state headquarters.
He further explained that the ongoing political outreach in Enugu and the South-East region is part of efforts to strengthen APC’s presence and ensure the zone’s full integration into the national political mainstream.
“We have started reaching out to people. Political evangelism has begun. The government has agreed to be part of us to move this party forward and ensure that the Renewable Agenda of President Tinubu comes to Enugu State,” he stated.
He lamented that the party’s poor outing in the last election where only 3,774 votes were recorded was a wake-up call to restructure and mobilize more effectively at the grassroots level.
“That number was shameful, and we are determined to turn it around. With the help of Governor Mbah and the renewed energy from our members, Enugu State will no longer remain in the opposition,” he added.
He described Governor Mbah’s administration as a transformative force, citing the state’s improved ranking in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and rapid infrastructural development under his leadership.
“In barely two years, Governor Mbah has taken Enugu from being behind in all sectors to becoming a frontline state. Enugu now ranks fifth in IGR nationwide, surpassing many states in the East, West, and even parts of the North,” the speaker emphasized.
The declaration, scheduled for October 14, is expected to mark a historic realignment in the South-East geopolitical zone, with APC leaders expressing optimism that the development will pave the way for the region’s increased participation in federal governance.
