
Tragedy struck at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, as a soldier identified as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi of the 221 Battalion allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.
According to a statement issued by the Nigerian Army’s 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, the incident occurred on 11 October 2025, leaving residents of the barracks in shock and disbelief.
Preliminary reports indicate that Lance Corporal Femi, who was on duty within the cantonment, had sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters. He was later found dead alongside his wife in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters within the barracks.
The Army said the remains of the deceased have been preserved, and an in-depth investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
In a statement signed by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, the Nigerian Army expressed deep regret over the unfortunate incident and extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that findings would be made public upon conclusion.
He further emphasized that the Army would take appropriate measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future, while calling for public understanding and cooperation during the investigation.
