DHQ Denies Coup Rumour, Clarifies Cancellation of Independence Anniversary Parade

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has strongly refuted an online report claiming that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary activities was linked to an alleged attempted military coup.

In a statement issued on Saturday, by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the DHQ described the report as false, malicious, and deliberately misleading, aimed at creating unnecessary tension and distrust among Nigerians.

According to the statement, the decision to cancel the anniversary parade was made to enable President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attend a strategic bilateral meeting outside the country and to allow the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) sustain ongoing operations against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry across the nation.

The military further clarified that the arrest of sixteen officers currently under investigation has no connection whatsoever to any alleged coup attempt. It explained that the investigation is a routine internal process meant to uphold discipline and professionalism within the ranks of the Armed Forces.

“An investigative panel has been duly constituted, and its findings will be made public upon conclusion,” the statement added.

The DHQ called on Nigerians to disregard the false narrative being circulated by “purveyors of misinformation and enemies of the nation,” while reaffirming the loyalty of the Armed Forces to the Constitution and the Federal Government.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains firmly loyal to the Constitution and the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR,” it stated.

It also urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies in their efforts to safeguard national peace and unity, stressing that democracy in Nigeria remains strong and enduring.
