Leadership, Training Critical to Military Effectiveness — COAS Shaibu During Visit to 1 Division

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reiterated that strong leadership and continuous training remain central to the Nigerian Army’s ability to confront emerging security challenges.

According to a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt. Col Apollonia Anele, COAS made the remark on Wednesday, during an operational tour of the 1 Division Area of Responsibility in Kaduna.

Addressing officers after an operational briefing at the Division Auditorium, General Shaibu emphasised that leadership is the most decisive factor in combating insecurity. He urged commanders at all levels to embody the values expected of them, noting that soldiers must be able to trust and depend on their leaders—both in routine duties and in the theatre of operations.

Speaking further, the COAS reminded officers that leading troops in battle is a fundamental responsibility of their commission. He called for unwavering dedication, loyalty and purposeful leadership, stressing that these qualities are essential for protecting lives and ensuring operational success.

At a separate address to soldiers on parade, the Army Chief charged troops to obey and trust their commanders, reinforcing the importance of discipline, loyalty and commitment in carrying out their constitutional mandate.

General Shaibu also underscored the vital role of training in sustaining military professionalism, describing it as “the best gift” the Army offers its personnel. He encouraged troops to take full advantage of courses offered across Nigerian Army training schools and divisional institutions to boost their skills and advance their personal development.

Reaffirming his commitment to troop welfare, the COAS commissioned a newly built soldiers’ canteen at the Division Headquarters as part of his visit. The tour marks his first official visit to 1 Division since assuming office.
