The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has expressed deep concern over the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, as well as students from St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara LGA of Niger State.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the military condemned the abductions as “heinous acts,” reaffirming its commitment to rescuing the victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
General Onoja noted that troops are actively engaged in ongoing operations aimed at locating and safely recovering the abducted students. He assured families and communities that the rescue mission remains a top operational priority.
DHQ Responds to Allegation of Troop Withdrawal
The statement also addressed claims by the Governor of Kebbi State that terrorists attacked the school barely 30 minutes after troops were withdrawn from the area. According to the DHQ, the allegation has been noted, and a comprehensive review of troop deployment and movement at the time of the incident is currently underway.
The military explained that operational decisions are typically guided by intelligence reports and the broader regional security structure. However, it stated that if the ongoing review uncovers any lapses, immediate corrective measures will be taken to prevent future occurrences.
Reassurance Amid Rising Insecurity
The DHQ acknowledged growing public concern over rising insecurity in parts of the North, assuring Nigerians that efforts to restore peace and stability remain in full force. It emphasized continued collaboration with state governments, community leaders, and other security agencies to enhance protection around schools and vulnerable communities.
“Our troops are on the ground pursuing all actionable intelligence to ensure the safe return of the abducted students,” the statement read.
