Troops Step Up Harvest-Season Security, Arrest Two Suspected Criminal Herders in Makurdi

Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have intensified security efforts to protect farmers during the ongoing harvest season, arresting two suspected criminal herders for allegedly trespassing and causing damage to crops on community farmlands in Makurdi, Benue State.

A statement from the Lt. Ahmad Zubairu Zubairu HQ JTF Operation WHIRL STROKE Said the incident occurred on 20 November 2025 during a routine farm-protection patrol by OPWS troops deployed at Zongo Akiki.

The soldiers intercepted the herders after they reportedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands, resulting in the destruction of crops belonging to local farmers.

According to the military authorities, the timely intervention of the troops averted further damage and prevented a possible confrontation between the herders and the affected community. The suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, after which appropriate legal action will follow.

The Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their vigilance and professionalism. He urged members of the public to avoid resorting to violence when faced with disputes, warning that retaliation only escalates tensions and undermines peace efforts.

Major General Gara further called on herders to obey the law, refrain from activities that threaten security, and respect farmlands and community property. He reaffirmed the resolve of Operation WHIRL STROKE to protect farmlands and ensure a safe environment for farmers and all lawful businesses.
