The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has provided a detailed explanation of the border incident involving local vigilantes and Nigerien troops in Mazanya community, Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
In a statement signed by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the DHQ said the incident occurred on 29 November 2025 when a convoy of four gun trucks and a Toyota Jeep carrying Nigerien troops crossed into Mazanya to fetch water an activity described as “routine and historically practiced” by troops from the neighbouring country.
However, the unusually large size of the convoy raised suspicion among local vigilante members, who mistakenly interpreted the movement as a potential hostile advance, leading them to open fire on the Nigerien soldiers.
According to the DHQ, Nigerian security officials immediately intervened and engaged the Nigerien commander in dialogue. The troops subsequently proceeded to fetch water and returned to their territory without further confrontation.
The Nigerien commander reportedly stressed the need for prior notification before future cross-border water-fetching missions, especially when large troop formations or senior officers are involved. He also agreed to enhanced communication channels to avoid misunderstandings.
As part of measures to prevent a recurrence, the DHQ directed the convening of a Joint Border Security Meeting between Nigerian and Nigerien security agencies. The meeting was held on 1 December 2025 to strengthen liaison, improve coordination, and reinforce existing protocols between both countries.
Major General Onoja reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and cooperation with the Republic of Niger, noting that both nations share strong cultural, economic and security ties. He added that joint efforts against terrorism, smuggling, illegal migration and other transborder crimes remain a top priority.
The DHQ assured residents of Mazanya and other border communities that the situation is fully under control and urged them to remain calm while continuing their lawful activities. It emphasized that lessons from the incident have been taken seriously and that concrete steps are underway to prevent similar misunderstandings in the future.
