New Defence Media Operations Director, Maj Gen Onoja, Holds Maiden Briefing, Pledges Stronger Military Media Collaboration

The newly appointed Director of Defence Media Operations (DDMO), Major General Michael E. Onoja, has held his maiden media briefing, assuring journalists of an open-door policy and strengthened cooperation between the military and the press.

He assumed office following the posting out of his predecessor, Maj Gen O.M. Bello, on 14 November 2025.

Addressing journalists on Monday, Maj Gen Onoja paid tribute to Maj Gen Bello, describing his tenure as one marked by commitment, professionalism, and effective communication. He pledged to build on the foundation laid by his predecessor as the Armed Forces intensify efforts to tackle insecurity nationwide.

Maj Gen Onoja commended the Nigerian media for what he described as unwavering cooperation with the military over the years. He acknowledged journalists as “heroes of democracy” whose work strengthens public accountability, free speech, and informed citizenship.

He lauded the press for its role in investigative reporting and public awareness, saying accurate information helps build trust and contributes to national stability. However, he cautioned against practices that undermine professionalism, including fabrication of stories and the pursuit of sensationalism over factual reporting.

He urged journalists to continue upholding high ethical standards, stressing that collaboration with the media is crucial in countering misinformation—particularly during periods of heightened security challenges.

The DDMO highlighted the efforts of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Olufemi Oluyede, who is leading strategic reforms aimed at improving the country’s security outlook.

He stated that Gen Oluyede has strengthened intelligence gathering, enhanced inter-agency joint operations, and promoted community engagement to improve trust and source grassroots-level intelligence.

Maj Gen Onoja noted that these measures are enhancing operational effectiveness, maintaining security pressure on criminal groups, and promoting professionalism and accountability within the Armed Forces.
Troop Welfare and Modern Equipment Prioritized

Maj Gen Onoja also disclosed that Gen Oluyede is championing improved welfare and resource allocation for personnel. He cited recent increases in Ration Cash Allowance and the distribution of modern equipment as steps taken to boost troop morale and operational capacity.

He emphasized that the CDS’s “Soldiers First” agenda is ensuring that frontline troops are motivated, better equipped, and resilient as they confront threats ranging from terrorism to banditry.
Defence Media Operations Opens Channels for Engagement

The new DDMO reiterated the department’s commitment to transparency and accessibility. He encouraged journalists to engage directly with his office for clarification on military operations or security-related information circulating in public discourse.

He also revealed plans to expand information-sharing platforms, introduce fact-checking initiatives, and organize capacity-building workshops aimed at supporting responsible reporting, especially on sensitive security matters.
Commitment to Peace and Security

Maj Gen Onoja reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ dedication to promoting national security, urging journalists to continue partnering with the military in the collective effort to maintain peace.

He thanked members of the media for their continued support and invited questions from journalists as he concluded his first briefing.
