
The Nigerian Army on Wednesday decorated 28 senior officers with new ranks, as the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), urged them to justify their elevation through renewed dedication, loyalty and service to the nation. The ceremony, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja, saw 28 Brigadier Generals promoted to the rank of Major General, including one posthumous promotion.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, General Musa who served as Special Guest of Honour commended the officers for their professionalism, courage and years of sacrifice. He said their promotion reflects their unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country and strengthening the Nigerian Army.
“These officers are among the finest leaders in our Armed Forces,” he said, adding that their new positions would require them to confront emerging security challenges with renewed resolve and strategic foresight.
General Musa also underscored the importance of inter-service cooperation, improved intelligence sharing and unity among security agencies. He acknowledged the support of the officers’ families and reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing welfare and operational capacity across the Armed Forces. He conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s congratulations, assuring that the administration remains focused on equipping the military with necessary resources.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the event as a significant achievement in the career progression of the senior officers. He maintained that promotion in the Nigerian Army is merit-based and transparent, stressing that the officers had demonstrated competence, discipline and loyalty.
The COAS also highlighted ongoing efforts to boost morale within the Army through improved healthcare, upgraded infrastructure and a more conducive professional environment.
Speaking on behalf of the newly promoted officers, Major General Francis Omata expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for approving their elevation. He pledged unalloyed loyalty and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to national service. He also appreciated the Minister of Defence and the COAS for their guidance and leadership.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Minister of State for Finance, members of the National Assembly, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, former Service Chiefs, senior military officers and members of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association, among others.
