The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has reiterated that January 15 is officially observed as Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, and not “Armed Forces Remembrance Day,” as commonly reported.
In a statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Samaila Uba, the AFN explained that the Federal Government of Nigeria set aside January 15 annually to honour serving personnel of the Armed Forces, while also remembering officers and soldiers who paid the supreme price in the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity and the protection of lives and property.
The statement noted that the annual commemoration is preceded by a week-long series of activities and culminates in a grand parade and wreath-laying ceremony held on January 15.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the name of the event was officially changed from “Armed Forces Remembrance Day” to “Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day” to more accurately reflect its dual purpose of celebrating serving personnel and commemorating fallen heroes.
The Armed Forces of Nigeria appealed to media organisations and practitioners to consistently adopt and use the correct designation Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in all future reports and coverage.
The AFN also expressed appreciation to the media for its continued support in the fight against insecurity and pledged to sustain strong collaboration with journalists in the interest of national security and development.
