The Nigerian Army has officially commenced the construction of an additional training depot in Amasiri-Edda, located in Afikpo and Edda Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State. This development aligns with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s national security architecture and enhancing military training capacity across the country.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Tuesday, was led by the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Dr. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru. In his address, Governor Nwifuru expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General W. Shaibu, for approving the project. He highlighted the strategic importance of the new facility, emphasizing that it would provide recruitment opportunities and encourage greater youth participation in the Nigerian Army, particularly from Ebonyi State and the wider South-East region.
Governor Nwifuru further commended the Nigerian Army for its ongoing contributions to the peace, security, and socio-economic development of the state. He reassured the public of the government’s commitment to supporting the project and fostering closer ties between the military and the people.
Representing the Chief of Army Staff at the event, Major General Oluremi Fadairo, General Officer Commanding 82 Division and Commander of Joint Task Force South-East (Operation UDO KA), lauded the cooperation of the host communities. He emphasized that the new depot is a step towards ensuring an equitable distribution of military infrastructure and fostering inclusive representation in the Armed Forces. General Fadairo stressed that the depot would provide more opportunities for South-East youths to join the Nigerian Army and serve their country.
He also urged the people of the South-East to take full advantage of recruitment opportunities in the Nigerian Army, noting that equal opportunities are available for all states and the Federal Capital Territory. Major General Fadairo concluded by reiterating the importance of military-community collaboration in tackling contemporary security challenges, assuring that the new training facility would contribute to regional stability and foster stronger civil-military relations.
The ceremony included the formal handover of land documents by Governor Nwifuru to the Nigerian Army, which were received by the Chief of Training (Army), Major General V.U. Okoro, on behalf of the COAS. This was followed by the symbolic laying of foundation blocks by the Governor and COAS representative.
The establishment of the Amasiri-Edda depot marks the third such facility in Nigeria. The first Depot Nigerian Army was established in Zaria in 1924, followed by the opening of the Depot Nigerian Army in Osogbo in 2025. With the addition of the Amasiri-Edda facility, the Nigerian Army continues its commitment to enhancing its training infrastructure in response to evolving national security needs.
