The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging that soldiers are threatening mutiny over unpaid salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading and capable of undermining national security.
In a statement issued on Monday, by Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director, Army Public Relations, said it had become aware of an online publication by Sahara Reporters which alleged discontent within the ranks, but insisted that there has been no threat of mutiny at any time.
According to the Army, mutiny is a serious offence under military law and is completely alien to the values of discipline, professionalism and loyalty upheld by officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.
“The report relied solely on anonymous and unverifiable sources circulated through non-official channels,” the statement said, noting that such claims do not reflect the views or conduct of Nigerian Army personnel, who are trained to address grievances through established internal procedures rather than public platforms.
The Army clarified that promotion increments constitute only a portion of military remuneration and should not be misrepresented as total earnings. It explained that military pay includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, as well as other entitlements that vary based on deployment, qualification and responsibilities.
It added that, in collaboration with the Armed Forces of Nigeria and relevant government agencies, structured welfare reforms are ongoing. These include periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care and insurance packages for troops and their families.
The Army further disclosed that the Chief of Army Staff has, since assuming office, initiated constructive engagements with relevant authorities on troop welfare, with early signs of positive outcomes.
Rejecting claims of neglect, the Army stated that the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has continued to demonstrate commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces, particularly in response to evolving security challenges.
Reaffirming its commitment to national duty, the Nigerian Army described itself as a cohesive, disciplined and professional force focused on defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations.
The Army urged the public to disregard unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information on the Armed Forces.
