Plateau Security Critical to National Stability — COAS Tells Troops

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to remain disciplined, committed, and professional, stressing that their role in addressing security challenges in Plateau State is critical to Nigeria’s national stability.

The charge was contained in a statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, which noted that the COAS gave the directive on Monday during an operational visit to 3 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters in Jos.

According to the statement, Lieutenant General Shaibu emphasised that discipline remains the bedrock of the military profession, describing service in the Nigerian Army as a voluntary calling anchored on the noble responsibility of defending the nation’s territorial integrity.

The COAS disclosed that he had received comprehensive briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on both operational and welfare challenges facing the troops, adding that the most pressing issues had already been addressed.

He assured personnel that Army Headquarters is providing essential combat enablers to ensure troops are properly equipped to carry out their duties effectively.

“The welfare of our troops remains a top priority. We will continue to provide the enabling environment required for you to perform your duties efficiently,” the COAS said.

Lieutenant General Shaibu urged young soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek guidance from their superiors, noting that officers have a responsibility to mentor subordinates towards successful and fulfilling military careers.

He also stressed the importance of physical fitness and mental alertness, revealing that deliberate measures have been instituted to prepare personnel for the rigorous demands of military service.

Highlighting leadership at all levels, the Army Chief described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) as the critical link between officers and soldiers, urging them to provide strong middle-level leadership and effective guidance.

On the ongoing operations in Plateau State, he described the security situation as unique, assuring troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP) is being properly guided and supported to achieve its mandate.

The COAS further encouraged personnel to channel grievances and concerns through the appropriate chain of command, assuring them of prompt attention.

Reaffirming the Army’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by troops, Lieutenant General Shaibu urged them to remain proud of their service and to uphold professionalism and honour in line with global best practices.

During the visit, the COAS also commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers and a separate block of residential accommodation for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos, as part of ongoing efforts to improve troop welfare and living conditions.
