Abuja Rallies Against Cancer as Project Pink Blue Leads World Cancer Day Movement

Communities across Abuja came together on World Cancer Day to amplify the call for cancer awareness, early detection, survivor support, and renewed hope for those currently battling the disease. The commemoration, spearheaded by Project Pink Blue, reinforced a powerful message: no one should fight cancer alone.

Aligned with the global theme of collective action, participants turned out in large numbers to speak up, wear the message, share knowledge, and stand united to “Choke Cancer.” Families, friends, survivors, advocates, and supporters converged in a vibrant show of solidarity—walking, cycling, skating, running, and riding against cancer.

The event kicked off at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel and moved through key areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Blending fitness with advocacy, activities included aerobic sessions, health walks, races, cycling, skating, and marathon-style movements, all aimed at promoting cancer awareness, fundraising, and access to free cancer screenings.

The initiative highlighted the critical importance of early detection and education in reducing cancer-related deaths, while also challenging Africans to change long-held perceptions about cancer through information, advocacy, and community-driven action.

Speaking at the event, the General Manager of Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Martin Zarybnicky, reaffirmed the hotel’s commitment to the cause.

“Transcorp Hilton is proud to associate with Project Pink Blue in the fight against cancer in Nigeria and across the world,” he said. “The awareness created today will provide people—especially those at risk—with the knowledge they need to fight and survive cancer.”

Project Pink Blue, renowned for its patient-centered advocacy, emphasized its belief that cancer should never be a lonely battle. According to Faredah, a Project Associate with the organization, the group works tirelessly to empower cancer patients and survivors while expanding access to life-saving screenings and support services.

“No human should fight cancer alone,” she said. “This movement is about standing together, supporting free cancer screenings, and uniting communities to confront the menace of cancer head-on.”
As participants moved through Abuja’s streets with energy and determination, the event became more than a commemoration it evolved into a call to action. It served as a reminder that through education, screening, and collective effort, lives can be saved and hope sustained.

The highlight of the event included the presentation of awards to deserving media personalities and Project Pink Blue staff in recognition of their outstanding contributions and dedicated service.

The activities will continue with a symposium, stakeholder engagement sessions, and high-level meetings with policymakers and government officials on national cancer control, scheduled to take place at the Transcorp Hilton on February 10.
