Nigeria, United States Deepen Security Cooperation During AFRICOM Commander’s Visit

Nigeria and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral security cooperation following the visit of the Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), General Dagvin Anderson, to Abuja from February 8 to 9.

During the visit, General Anderson was received by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and held high-level engagements with key Nigerian security officials, including the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd); the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu; and other senior government and military leaders.

Discussions focused on shared security priorities and the enduring partnership between both nations in countering terrorist organizations that pose threats to Nigeria, the United States, the wider region, and global security.

The meetings also explored opportunities for expanded military training, future force development, real-world operational training, joint exercises, and other specialized capabilities that the United States can provide in support of Nigeria’s security objectives.

As part of the visit, General Anderson toured the joint United States–Nigeria intelligence fusion cell, a collaborative platform designed to strengthen Nigeria’s intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. The facility supports real-time operational outcomes and contributes to building sustainable, long-term capacity for Nigerian security forces.

General Anderson also interacted with senior Nigerian security officials, reiterating the United States’ commitment to supporting Nigerian-led solutions through intelligence sharing and technical advisory support aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s independent operational effectiveness.
