UK, German Defence Attachés Visit Operation HADIN KAI Headquarters, Reaffirm Counterterrorism Support

The Defence Attachés of the United Kingdom and Germany to Nigeria have reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and insurgency during a visit to the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) in Maiduguri.

The visiting officials ,  Brigadier Tom Harper of the United Kingdom and Colonel Boris Bovecamp of Germany — made the pledge during what was described as a historic engagement at the Theatre Command headquarters on Wednesday.

Brigadier Harper underscored the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, built on mutual respect and shared values including democracy, rule of law and human rights. He commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their sustained efforts in combating terrorism in the North East, particularly under Operation HADIN KAI.

He also conveyed the UK’s readiness to expand training support through the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT), aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of Nigerian troops.

Similarly, Colonel Bovecamp said Germany was exploring additional areas of collaboration, especially in capacity building and regional cooperation initiatives. He noted that such partnerships would enhance operational effectiveness and deepen collaborative efforts to defeat terrorism.

In his remarks, the Theatre Commander of OPHK, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, commended the UK and Germany for their contributions to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign. He stated that existing training programmes have significantly improved the skills and operational readiness of troops confronting evolving security threats in the region.

He further identified technical expertise, equipment provision and logistics support as key areas for future collaboration.
