Nigerian Army Strengthens Ties with US Defence Security Cooperation University

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening professional military education through strategic collaboration with international defence institutions.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede Shaibu, made the pledge on Thursday when a delegation from the Defense Security Cooperation University (DSCU) Nigeria Programme paid him a courtesy visit at the Army Headquarters in Abuja.

Shaibu said professional military education remains critical to building a modern and adaptable fighting force capable of addressing the country’s evolving security challenges.

He noted that the Nigerian Army would continue to subscribe to relevant courses offered by the DSCU, particularly programmes aimed at enhancing defence management, logistics systems and institutional capacity within the service.

According to him, exposing personnel to specialised training programmes and international academic platforms will help sharpen strategic thinking, improve defence management practices and deepen institutional knowledge among officers and soldiers.

The army chief added that such initiatives are vital in preparing military personnel to effectively manage complex operational and administrative responsibilities in modern military environments.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, retired Major General Miguel Casteyanoss, said the DSCU’s engagement with the Nigerian Army focuses on strengthening institutional capacity to help partner nations sustain and replicate military capabilities over time.

He explained that the university provides specialised courses and advisory support aimed at improving defence governance, logistics management and policy development.

Casteyanoss also disclosed that ongoing collaboration between the DSCU and the Nigerian Army includes initiatives to support institutional systems such as material readiness, reporting structures and life-cycle management frameworks.

He expressed confidence that continued participation of Nigerian Army personnel in DSCU programmes would reinforce professional standards, institutional resilience and long-term capability development within the Nigerian Army.
