The Nigerian Army and the Egyptian Armed Forces have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening military cooperation, particularly in advanced training and professional development, as both countries seek to address evolving security challenges.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, made this known on Thursday while receiving the Egyptian Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim, during a courtesy visit at Army Headquarters in Abuja.
Shaibu said Nigeria and Egypt share a longstanding and mutually beneficial military relationship, noting that collaboration between both armies has become an important platform for enhancing operational capability and professional competence.
He explained that sustained cooperation through advanced military courses, training exchanges and professional military education is essential for preparing personnel to effectively confront modern security threats.
According to the Army chief, several officers of the Nigerian Army have already benefited from specialised military training programmes in Egypt, which he said have significantly strengthened the force’s professional capacity.
He added that the Nigerian Army is willing to expand these opportunities to ensure its personnel acquire the knowledge and skills required to tackle complex and emerging security threats.
Shaibu also stressed the need to strengthen institutional linkages between both armies through strategic-level training and increased participation in programmes at the Nigerian Army War College. He noted that such engagements would promote knowledge exchange, deepen professional ties and enhance joint capacity to counter security threats.
The Army chief further invited the Egyptian Army to participate in the Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026 scheduled for July.
He also highlighted the importance of exploring additional areas of cooperation, particularly in the development of aviation capabilities and operational support systems, noting that such collaboration would improve operational readiness, technological innovation and overall mission effectiveness.
Earlier, Ibrahim said his visit was aimed at reviewing the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between both militaries in 2024.
He noted that significant progress had been recorded in the execution of several aspects of the agreement, particularly in the area of training cooperation. He added that preparations were underway for the next Military Committee Meeting scheduled to hold in Cairo later this year.
The Egyptian defence attaché reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening military collaboration with Nigeria, especially in advanced military training and intelligence sharing to effectively address contemporary security challenges facing both nations.
