Panic gripped residents of Maiduguri on Monday evening after multiple suicide bomb explosions struck key locations across the city during the Iftar period.
The attacks, which occurred around 7:05 p.m. on March 16, were reportedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers. The explosions hit three densely populated areas: the Post Office vicinity, the Monday Market axis, and the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).
According to a statement from the Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, Media Information Officer, Lt. Col Uba Sani, the attackers targeted crowded public spaces in what authorities described as an attempt to cause mass casualties and widespread panic.
Security forces, including troops of Operation HADIN KAI and the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, swiftly responded to the incidents. The affected areas were immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further damage and ensure public safety.
Emergency responders, led by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) alongside other medical teams, evacuated victims to nearby health facilities, including General Hospital, Specialist Hospital, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, where the injured are currently receiving treatment.
Officials say rescue and evacuation efforts are ongoing, while medical personnel continue to attend to victims across multiple hospitals in the city.
Preliminary findings suggest the possibility of coordinated attacks involving multiple suicide bombers deployed across Maiduguri. In response, security agencies have intensified patrols, surveillance operations, and counter-IED measures to prevent additional incidents and apprehend any remaining suspects.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas when possible, and report any suspicious activities or objects to security agencies.
Operation HADIN KAI also expressed condolences to the families of victims, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and pursuing those responsible for the attacks.
