
Troops of have intensified intelligence-led operations across , recording significant successes against criminal networks ahead of the 2026 farming season.
The pre-wet season offensive, aimed at curbing insecurity and ensuring a safe environment for agricultural activities, has targeted cattle rustlers and armed bandits operating within the state.
On March 23, 2026, troops deployed at Ayilamo acted on credible intelligence from residents of Anyiin, leading to the arrest of four suspected cattle rustlers along the Anyiin–Ugba road. The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Agro Rangers unit of the NSCDC . The suspects were apprehended with remnants of butchered cows and subsequently handed over to the for further investigation.
In a related development, troops from the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Otukpo, supported by a Quick Response Group, raided a suspected criminal hideout at Amla Icho. While some suspects fled, five individuals were arrested. Security operatives recovered locally fabricated firearms, mobile phones, illicit drugs, and spent cartridges, indicating the group’s involvement in wider criminal activities.
Clearance patrols conducted in Mbapa and Mbabuande villages also led to the arrest of four additional suspects. During one of the encounters, an armed suspect was neutralised after attempting to disarm a soldier, while others escaped.
On the same day, troops rescued an injured herder, identified as Idris Abubakar, who had been attacked while tending cattle. He was evacuated for urgent medical treatment. Separately, three suspected cattle rustlers were apprehended at Zongo Akiki and handed over to police authorities.
Operations continued on March 24, when a night patrol in Uhembe village foiled another cattle rustling attempt. The suspects fled the scene, abandoning stolen livestock and a vehicle, both of which were recovered by troops.
Military authorities attributed the successes to strong collaboration with local communities, whose intelligence has been instrumental in guiding operations.
The Force Commander of Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to sustaining the offensive, noting that proactive measures are essential to preventing farmer-herder clashes and safeguarding food production in the state.
He emphasised that the ongoing operations are designed not only to neutralise immediate threats but also to deter future criminal activities and promote lasting stability across affected communities.
