AN URGENT APPEAL FOR INFRASTRUCTURAL AND ECOLOGICAL REDRESS IN IPELE LAND

An Open Call to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the South West Development Commission (SWDC), and the Ondo State Government

IPELE is a historic, highly strategic, and politically vital community. As the second-largest town in the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State and the official headquarters of the Owo East LCDA, Ipele stands as a major economic pillar and a critical political ward in the region.

A vibrant and largely agrarian community, Ipele comprises 38 strong units (sub-communities). It boasts a rich demographic tapestry that cuts across several indigenous populations from both the southwest and North Central geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

Despite its current challenges, Ipele’s contributions to national development and regional sustenance remain undeniable:

Agricultural & Natural Wealth: Ipele serves as a primary food basket*for the South West and Nigeria at large. The land is uniquely blessed with vast agricultural potential, rich mineral deposits, and fertile soil.
*Cultural Heritage: It is anchored by a revered, first-class traditional institution that has fostered peace and unity across diverse ethnic groups for generations.
Distinguished Global Footprint: Ipele is the proudly documented home of Chief Meshach Otokiti Feyidel, the legendary statesman who served as the first Nigerian Secretary-General of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Under Chief Feyide’s visionary leadership, Nigeria’s oil production surged significantly—catapulting the nation to the 8th position in global producing capacity. Countless other illustrious sons and daughters of Ipele continue to serve Nigeria selflessly across various sectors

Regrettably, the immense socio-economic potential of this patriotic community remains trapped due to severe ecological degradation and total infrastructural abandonment.

The Critical Crisis: The Abuja–Lokoja–Kabba–Ipele Corridor

Ipele serves as a major geographical gateway linking the South West, North Central, and South South regions.
Despite this strategic position:
The vital Abuja–Lokoja–Kabba–Ipele road has remained impassable for years.
The Ipele axis of this federal road is currently the worst and most deplorable stretch, causing immense hardship to residents, farmers, commuters, and interstate commerce.
Despite reports of budgetary provisions and promises for constructive repairs on this national asset, no significant work has been executed on the ground.

Coupled with unchecked ecological challenges, these bad roads prevent our farmers from transporting produce to market, paralyze local commerce, and subject our people to daily pain and danger. Ipele cannot continue to be treated with levity and neglect.

On behalf of the entire community, we respectfully call for immediate, direct, and targeted intervention from:

The Federal Government of Nigeria: To immediately mobilize contractors to commence the full reconstruction of the Ipele end of the Abuja–Lokoja–Kabba–Ipele road, restoring this critical interstate artery.
The South West Development Commission (SWDC): To integrate Ipele into its priority infrastructural and ecological intervention masterplans.
The Ondo State Government: To address the internal road networks, ecological threats, and rural infrastructure needed to unlock the town’s full economic and agricultural capability.

Ipele has given so much to Ondo State and the Nigerian nation; it is time for the government to restore its infrastructure and secure its future.
