Five Arrested Over Stray Bullet Death at Wedding in Maiduguri

The Headquarters Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI has arrested five individuals following the unauthorised discharge of firearms that led to the death of a young girl in Borno State.
The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on April 4, 2026, in the Ngomari area of Maiduguri during a wedding celebration at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Teachers Staff Quarters.
According to a statement issued by the Media Information Officer, Lt Col. Sani Uba, Headquarters Joint Task Force. (North East) Operation HADIN KAI, the suspects allegedly members of a vigilante escort team attached to a Local Government Chairman fired shots into the air during the event.
The celebratory gunfire reportedly resulted in a stray bullet striking and killing a young girl, sparking outrage and prompting swift action by security operatives.
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, working alongside the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), tracked and arrested five suspects identified as Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Mohammed (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Mohammed (18). They are currently in custody and are expected to be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
The Theatre Command condemned the act, describing it as reckless, unauthorised, and a violation of established firearm regulations. It emphasised that the CJTF operates strictly in a supportive capacity and is not permitted to use firearms indiscriminately, especially in civilian settings.
Authorities have launched a full investigation in collaboration with the Borno State Government, including the Office of the Senior Adviser on Security, to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability.
Despite the tragedy, the military noted that the overall security situation in the area remains calm, with troops maintaining heightened vigilance.
The command also extended condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting civilians and upholding justice.
