Troops Dismantle IPOB/ESN Camp in Imo State, Recover Suspected Remains of Missing Soldiers

Nigerian Army troops under 82 Division, in collaboration with sister security agencies, have dismantled a suspected stronghold of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during a clearance operation in Imo State
.
According to military authorities, the operation took place on 24 April 2026 along the Ubaha Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area, following credible intelligence on the location of the camp.

The mission was also aimed at recovering the remains of two soldiers, Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were reportedly abducted and killed by suspected IPOB/ESN operatives in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

The troops reportedly came under heavy fire upon approaching the suspected hideout but responded with superior force, repelling multiple ambush attempts and forcing the attackers to retreat. The camp was subsequently overrun and dismantled.

A search of the area led to the discovery of shallow graves suspected to contain human remains. The graves were excavated and the remains recovered.

Military authorities said the remains have been secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.

Efforts are ongoing to notify the families of the deceased soldiers to support identification processes and arrange burial ceremonies in their honour.

The operation, according to the Nigerian Army, forms part of continued efforts to degrade criminal networks linked to IPOB and the Eastern Security Network in the South-East region and restore stability in affected communities in Imo State.

The Army reiterated its commitment to sustained operations against armed groups and urged residents to continue providing credible intelligence to security agencies.

The proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), have been repeatedly linked by security forces to violent incidents in the region, allegations the groups have consistently disputed.

The Nigerian Army said operations in the South-East will continue until what it described as “criminal elements” are neutralised and lasting peace is restored.
